Axel has been in private legal practice since January 1981, apart from a sojourn to the public sector for 4 years (January 2013 – March 2017).
Starting his career in civil litigation, Axel has handled numerous cases in the State and Supreme Courts (including in the Court Of Appeal), many of which have been reported in the law reports. 2 of his cases have been included in the seminal work on Civil Procedure in Singapore. Another changed the (then) Subordinate Court Rules when on Appeal, a provision in the Rules was held to be `ultra vires` the (then) Subordinate Courts Act.
Axel`s clients have included internationally recognised organisations such as Citibank, American Express and Groupe Schneider.
From January 2013 to March 2017, Axel joined the Public Sector on a 4 year contract to help set up and run a new department for a Statutory Board. He then returned to private legal practice.
Axel also believes in volunteering and contributing back to society. He was Honorary Legal Advisor to the Singapore Armed Forces Yacht Club for 12 years. For 25 years, he was (variously) a member, Vice-Chairman, and Chairman of the Ministry Of Home Affairs` Criminal Law Advisory Committee (Hearing); he is currently a member of its Criminal Law Review Board. For his service, he has been honoured by the State by the conferment of the PBM (Public Service Medal) and BBM (Public Service Star).
He has also been a member, and Vice-Chairman, of the Casino Regulatory Authority`s Patron Dispute Committee (2012 – 2017).
A long-time blood donor (200+ donations) Axel began volunteering with the Singapore Red Cross Society in 2009. He was Vice-Chairman from 2012 – 2015, and remains a member of its Audit Committee. He is also a Vice-Chairman of the International Federation Of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies` Compliance And Mediation Committee.
A sportsman most of his life, he was a Technical Official for the Triathlon events in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and 2015 SEA Games.
